Oil Pastels - Scratch Art

 What We Did:

In this activity,  students started out by coloring their paper in a rainbow pattern with oil pastel colors and painted black paint mixed with soap over it. Then we started learning about a scratch artist, Sally Maxwell, and the author Eric Carle. Sally was important for this lesson because the students go to be their own scratch artist and Eric is important because we talked about the famous book he wrote named The Mixed-Up Chameleon. We sketched out our chameleon first, then practiced on an extra scratch art sheet until our paint was dry. When the paint was dry we drew our chameleon on.

Extension Activity:

Students could be learning about many different animals, like in a zoo. It could be a field trip to a zoo! After the field trip the students choose one animal to scratch art it. By going through the same steps of a rough draft first can help the students see what they may need to add. Once they have their animal picked and sketched out they can scratch art it to hang on the wall, like a zoo!
